The First Declaration of Tinos

(24-30 September, 2002)

Spaceship Earth, we have not abandoned you!

With this declaration we recommit the promises made 40 years ago in Delos.  We have seen the arrival of the global village we foretold and have witnessed our forecasts materialize, not the least of which are megalopolitan developments around the globe.  While many technological advances have improved our lives, their benefits are ill-distributed.  Consequently, many of our concerns for the future of human settlements remain.

In the 40-year interim, the population of the Earth has doubled; and the gap between rich and poor has widened. Population growth will continue - though at a lower rate.  The inevitability of Ecumenopolis is increasingly obvious. The global environment suffers. Improvement in the standard of living must parallel anticipated growth. Our goal continues to be the achievement of sustainable development with effective protection of the ecosystem, an equitable distribution of resources and the achievement of cultural well-being for all.

Having met in Delos, and observed a minute of silence in memory of the Delians who have left us, we assume responsibility for continuing their pledge. C.A. Doxiadis initiated us in a new approach to the problem - Ekistics. Stewardship of his legacy now passes on to us. And we, at Tinos, accept the challenge.

We, the members of the World Society for Ekistics, do hereby affix our signatures:
